All Greased Up…

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 30, 2009

There was some exciting art news coverage on The Wright Stuff this morning. For those who are not familiar with the Channel Five morning show, its presented by Matthew Wright – former showbiz hack of The Sun – and a changing panel of special guests. This mornings ‘special guests’ included Craig Revel Horwood, Anne Diamond and some other twat. Craig Revel Horwood was outraged by the Tate Modern deciding to show art aimed at paedophiles – referring to Richard Princes’ Spiritual America included in Pop Life: Art In A Material World. The Strictly Come Dancing judge described the image of the 10 year old Brooke Shield as “all greased up and looking suggestively at the camera” and ended his insightful discussion with “I have not seen the work – so i could not say whether it is art or not”. Thanks Craig! Apparently, the topic was also followed up by Vanessa on the radio… but I didn’t hear the programme, so I can’t say whether it was good or not.

Pop Life/ Sold Out

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 30, 2009

Everyone was at Tate Modern last night: Hans Ulrich Obrist, Gustav Metzger, Julia Peyton Jones…. Alison Gingeras managed to include both her arse and her boyfriend in the exhibition (interchangeable?) and along with co-curator Catherine Wood inadvertently sparked a mass media, kiddie porn witch-hunt with the inclusion of ‘challenging material’: Richard Prince’s ‘Spiritual America’ (yawn).
A very sheepish Rob Pruitt had nothing to fear – paedos beat biggots in tabloid Top-Trumps.

The show was to be called ‘Sold Out’ but after certain artists threatened a boycott and the Marketing got messy the Curators relented. The only real scandal amidst all the unfashionable and slightly embarrassing irony is the curatorial assertion that male artists knowingly sell-out by embracing branding and endorsements and by sacrificing taste whilst women simply sell their bodies: Tracey and Sarah (‘Did you wank over me yet?’ t shirts) Cosey Fanni Tutti (wank mags) and Andrea Fraser (fucks a collector for $20,000).

After party at Tramp: ‘Cash bar until 3am, Mixed groups only, first come first served.’ Which is a bit like being told to fuck off (not to mention homophobic).

BBC Radio Bore

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 29, 2009

Are you a fan of Radio Four? Thought so. Us too. Especially Gardeners’ Question Time, Front Row, and You and Yours.

Well, you’ll thank us then. Should you be listening in on Friday 2nd Oct, turn off and listen to a half hour of anything else between 7.15pm and 7.45pm as Damien Hirst will be ‘discussing’ his ‘painting’ on Front Row.
Hirst will be showing a series of works from ’06 – ’08 at the Wallace Collection, where one of White Cube’s silky-tongued staff has managed to convince them to show Hirst’s tat alongside their collection. In his own words, the works are “deeply connected to the past.” Profound.

Top Five of the Week

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 29, 2009

Welcome to Tuesday’s Top Five:

This week: Overrated Artists!

Here’s ours.

1) Karla Black
2) Seth Price
3) Ryan Gander
4) Tris Vonna-Michell
5) Katja Strunz
6) Tomma Abts

Wow. Now we’ve started we can’t stop. Top five becomes six. Ah well. We’ve also realised that list looks like a group show we’d probably go and see. Well, such is life, contradictions and hypocrisy.

Send your additions to
Not applicable are artists who are a) just more successful than you, or b) just twats.

Whitechapel Book Un-Fair

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 28, 2009

Grown-ups went to The London Art Book Fair which offered a great opportunity for booksellers and publishing people to undercut the Whitechapel’s resident franchise Koenig Books. Adding insult to injury, the Whitechapel’s ever reliably crap marketing department even boasted of “up to 40% off publications” on its own website. The Fair was of course highjacked by White Cube who organised a rather vulgar booksigning by Ms Tracey Emin.

Sad people with no lives went to the book-fairs yesterday. Publish and Be Damned, the self-publishing fair (ie for those raised upon Blue Peter and Steeleye Span) forgot to book Rochelle School in time and were forced to move to a youth club called Oxford House. Oxford House, clearly concerned by the elitism inherent in any reference to the other, irrelevent, city on the Thames, have hilariously attempted a rebrand by calling themselves ‘Oh!’).
Kit Hammonds’, ‘the organiser’, charged everyone to take part this year and put all his favourite publications on the ground floor and let the others fight it out upstairs. There was a piece on the Today programme on Radio 4 this morning. You could ‘Listen Again’ here to an account of the ‘dizzying array of these rather unusual publications’ (Hammonds predictably endorses Stephen Willats’ ‘Control’, that celebrated cure for insomniacs, and Pablo Leon de la Barra talks about being ‘Macho, not rough’ and reading pornography at his hairdresser in Mexico City).

Whitechapel Advisory

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 28, 2009

Whitechapel Gallery, until recently better known as The Whitechapel Art Gallery, ‘one of Europe’s premier public art galleries’ was rebranded following advice from the management consultant Peter Wallis. Wallis is better known as Peter York – the author of ‘The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook’ and, more recently, ‘Dictator Style: Lifestyles of the World’s Most Colorful Despots.’
Presumably he is also assisting with their reception guest lists and fundraising activities.

Mini reviews sent from Berlin from the last two days openings:

Tomma Abts at Giti Nourbakhsch – Dramatic new direction. Erm… No. Not really.

Stephen G. Rhodes at Isabella Bortolozzi – “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Kelley, Lite!”

Cheyney Thompson at Daniel Buchholz – conceptudull.

Thea Djordjadze at Micky Schubert – our first visit to this tiny Kreuzberg gallery which managed to trump the Djordjadze show at Sprueth Magers aerodrome.

General Idea at Esther Schipper – best in show. Includes wonderfully hammy acting in their only film ‘God is My Gigolo’.

Goodbye, Moody Ruby

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 25, 2009

Having flown back to London, I missed the opening of Stephen Rhodes’ show at Isabella Bortolozzi. Gossip is that Rhodes has only been able to work with Metro Pictures since Sterling Ruby left for Pace. Apparently Sterling can’t stand Mr Rhodes, and threatened to leave should he be taken on by the gallery.
