Wayward Hayward…

Posted by cathedralofshit on February 26, 2010

The Hayward Gallery seems to be closing for refurbishment… or is it? We’ve been somewhat unreliably informed (you’ve gotta speculate to accumulate) that this period is actually masking a programming gap due to the effects of the recession. It was refurbished some 6 years ago with 1.3m from the Arts Lottery Council and £500,000 from other sources, so CoS wonder exactly what they’re doing in there… perhaps Ralph’s getting new curtains…?

We enjoyed Francesco Bonami’s self-deprecating humour here.

You’ll Never Work In This Town Again

Posted by cathedralofshit on February 25, 2010

Oh. In case you didn’t know, Sladen has left the building. Did he jump or was he pushed? We guess at “mutual consent” (ie pushed to temporarily protect the real problem upstairs). That said he employed a lot of freelancers and delegated rather more than he might have… but he’s lasted a long time under Eshun. Good Luck Mark…

Meanwhile the ICA thinks it’s found a brilliant way to solve their financial problems.
They’ll need to sell 32 and a half Matt Mullican posters… erm, prints… before they break even and start to pay Ekow’s salary for March. We think that Phil Collins’ somewhat prophetically titled work from the series “you’ll never work in this town again” might be a better seller at £150 only they’ll need to sell forty six and a half of those before they make any inroads.

There’s always someone, somewhere, with a big nose who knows…

Posted by cathedralofshit on February 23, 2010

News on the street is that Scottish ‘borrower’ Luke Fowler is facing court action for using someone else’s film.
The one about RD Laing apparently. We know very little so this item is a whole lot more speculative that usual (90% SPECULATION! GUARANTEED!), but allegedly the lawsuit request is for 50% of any income he has made, both through sales and exhibition fees.
Apparently his gallerist, Toby Webster has told him he is on his own for this one… Good luck Lukey.

Roving I

Posted by cathedralofshit on February 16, 2010

Having overheard the mundane sales patter of many a blue chip art dealer, we all know art is an interchangeable commodity (as overheard from a certain White Cube dealer “Fuck it. Cars, art, antiques – it’s just selling shit”) we are very excited to hear (kindly emailed from source D+P in ‘Central East London’ [that’ll be Shoreditch then]) that Kenny Schachter is taking this literally. Behold – here and here.

But, more excitingly, a little delving has pulled up Kenny’s blog. Okay, not a huge amount of delving. Simply a browse around his website, truth be told.
Anyway, check it out – it’s like reading the art diary musings of an art A-level student from Wolverhampton. It’s CoS’ new second favourite blog. Here.

And a couple of teasers:

When you look at a piece of art what thoughts pass through your mind? One of the first things I think of is what went into making it and how long did it take. Art is an amazing process: besides the making, why? When I look at Damien Hirst art I think the opposite: what little thought, effort, content, and the why usually has to do with making money. Besides isn’t it cheating if someone does the struggling and another claims the credit?

When you think of art you think of canvas and paint, like a Van Gogh painting which probably cost as much as £3.70 to actually make. But Van Gogh would probably be a different artist if he knew about Lady Gaga, Madonna, and football players like Beckham who signed a contract to play in the USA for something like $250,000,000. The glittering diamond skull of Damien Hirst was something like if we held up a giant mirror to our society and took a close look at each other and ourselves.

BBC 1 – Notts County 0

Posted by cathedralofshit on February 15, 2010

Anyone catch the BBC 10 o’clock News the other night? The shit’s going off in British Fashion, Haiti, MI5, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan… and Nottingham Contemporary. A group of local children opined in a series of interviews that a shopping centre might have been better.
Nick Hyam, the BBC ‘art man’, says it has no-one famous in it. Which of course is the first port of call when curating an exhibition (is Basshunter free? Is he making art these days?). Perhaps he was referring to complete unknowns such as Turner Prize nominee Goshka Macuga, not to mention the not altogether unheard ofs that are Pawel Althamer, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Július Koller, Robert Kusmirowski, David Maljkovic, Aleksandra Mir, Deimantas Narkevičius, Otolith Group, Tobias Putrih and Jane and Louise Wilson…

It has been announced that curators of the 12th International Istanbul Biennial in 2011 will be Adriano Pedrosa and Jens Hoffmann. CoS are pleased to see that Cock, er… Koc Holding will once again be the main sponsors (and possibly activity?).

CoS reader, JJ Charlesworth, has taken the time to research and write something proper about the fuck up that is the ICA.
