Bill Viola is not an artist

Posted by cathedralofshit on January 5, 2011

We have long suspected it but it is now official. The European Commission have backed Her Majesties Customs and Revenue ruling against Haunch of Venison requiring them to pay VAT on the import of his tiresome hardware at the standard rate of 17.5% (or 15% or 20% or whatever it is/ was when it happened etc) rather than the 5% that is imposed upon artworks. Dan Flavin has suffered the same fate. HoV have said the decision is “comical”. What’s really comical is that Flavin and Viola have left HoV.
Conceptually speaking CoS thinks that the EU got it pretty much right about this and the secondary market’s fetishisation of electrical appliances. To quote Grandpa Weiner: “The piece need not be built” and in the case of Viola we would all rather it wasn’t. Lucky HMRC haven’t got the time to start opening the (empty) crates bouncing bonds, back and forth between Switzerland and London or a few others would be in trouble… How long before Haunch is revealed to not be an art gallery?

POP Goes the Editor…

Posted by cathedralofshit on November 16, 2010

Well, Dasha didn’t last long at POP now did she? Her 18 month tenure and attempt to “revamp the magazine in order to provide a broader point of view focusing also on art, contemporary culture and the globalisation of all things pop-related” has comes to a drastic end, rather than changing the world of art and culture publishing as once predicted by Zhukova sycophants consorts. She joins forces with Larry G, Eric ‘Google’ Schmidt and Rupert Murdoch’s wife Wendi to start up the brilliantly titled Sebastian Cwilich, formerly of Christie’s and Haunch of Venison will be COO. As a list of contributors we can only predict a tasteless but hugely profitable monstrosity.
Though we look forward to being able to buy Dan Colen by Paypal.

Eugh. CoS needs a lie down in a darkened room and an ice cold Malibu and Coke.

Oh deer.

Posted by cathedralofshit on September 24, 2010

It seems that the world’s worst gallery, Haunch of Venison, may be trumped in those stakes by their own makers, BlainSouthern. They are, as expected, making off with HoV’s stable of shiny artists.
Former yBa turned king of unnecessary overproduction Mat Collishaw has jumped ship and is reported to be the first show in their new temporary space – some info here on the Art Nespaper. Collishaw said he has always “enjoyed a fruitful working relationship with Harry Blain in the past”. For that read: “he always made me truck-loads of cash for my mediocre output”.

And as it’s Friday – here’s a delightful reminder of just how dreadful Bill Viola is, who has apparently also left for the big boy’s new gallery along with Rachel Howard, Anton Henning and Jeroen Verhoeven.

Where is your dignity?

Posted by cathedralofshit on August 4, 2010

We thought we’d seen it all.
It’s enough to make you consider suicide as your summer holiday destination of 2010.

Some stuff that happened.

Posted by cathedralofshit on June 1, 2010

Hi. Sorry to have been a little slow of late. We all got a variant of swine-flu. A type described as ‘latent, slow-moving and often dormant’ – frighteningly in keeping with our blogging. Morale sure is low here in the CoS offices.

News in from a mole at Haunch of Venison has informed us that Harry Blain and Graham Southern are jumping ship from Haunch of Venison. The gallery is also heading back to its original home in early 2011. What will happen to what was the Museum of Mankind is yet to be mentioned anywhere.

Our chirpy insider also added; “every minute I have to spend in this place makes me want to die”.

We, here at CoS are very excited. Who will they reopen with? We’re hoping Bill Viola or Rina Banerjee. Or both. A collaborative show.
What a dream.

Whitechapel Worries….

Posted by cathedralofshit on March 9, 2010

Word from the Whitechapel is that they have spent all their endowment on the building project and are now struggling. Each department has been told they have no budget and have to fundraise increasingly, and staff are being made redundant. They aren’t quite in the realm of the ICA – but then they aren’t run by self-serving New Labour poster-boy Eshun.

Expect one or more of the following – a number of film and video-based exhibitions (no shipping), more exhibitions by British artists (again, no shipping), an exhibition by an artist from a major blue chip gallery (financial support) or a wing being rented out to soon-to-be-evicted Haunch of Venison. Or maybe all of the above… Jane and Louise Wilson exhibition anyone?
